Understanding the “Karam” (generosity) of the Dhofari people. A comprehensive guide to etiquette, local customs, and meaningful cultural exchange in Southern Oman.

The Article: For the European traveler, visiting Salalah is as much about the people as it is about the landscapes. Oman is consistently ranked as one of the safest and most welcoming countries in the world. This is rooted in the ancient code of Karam—an innate sense of hospitality. To help you navigate this beautiful culture with confidence, we have prepared this cultural compass.

The Ritual of Coffee and Dates (Kahwa)

In Salalah, you are rarely a “customer”; you are a “guest.” Whether you are entering a shop in the Haffah Souq or a mountain home in the Jabal Qara, you will likely be offered Kahwa.

  • The Etiquette: Always accept the cup with your right hand. The coffee is light, spiced with cardamom and saffron, and served in small portions.
  • The Signal: When you have finished and do not want a refill, gently shake your cup from side to side before handing it back to your host. If you simply hand it back, they will continue to pour!

Dress Code and Respectful Photography

While Salalah is becoming more international, it remains a traditional society.

  • What to Wear: For men and women, we recommend clothing that covers the shoulders and knees when in public spaces like markets or mosques. Lightweight linen and cotton are perfect for the climate.
  • Capturing Memories: Omani people are generally very friendly, but always ask for permission before taking a photo of a local person, especially women. A simple “Samaht?” (May I?) accompanied by a smile goes a long way.

The Language of Connection

You don’t need to be fluent in Arabic to win hearts in Dhofar. Using a few local phrases shows that you value the culture:

  • “As-salamu alaykum”: Peace be upon you (The standard greeting).
  • “Shukran”: Thank you.
  • “Zain”: Good/Fine (A very common Omani response).

At Salalah Breeze, our guides act as cultural bridges. We don’t just show you the sights; we introduce you to our friends, our stories, and our way of life, ensuring your journey is as enriching as it is beautiful.
